Say her name...correctly.
We just got news that President #46 and our Vice President have been chosen. While we are excited that there is going to be a transition in power from our previous administration, we are also excited that there is going to be the first Black and Asian woman in the second highest position in our country. Regardless of political leaning, this is history being made. It is amazing that in our lifetimes we are able to see the first Black president AND our incoming Vice President.
Now we just need people to pronounce her name correctly. If you are unsure, just Google "how to pronounce Kamala Harris". I promise you will find multiple sources to help you with that. Names are important. What a person is called means something. People taking the time to learn how to pronounce someone's name shows respect. As someone with an uncommon name, I understand how the lack of care that comes with someone pronouncing your name can make you feel.
While she may never hear 99.99999% of the people who will mispronounce her name - whether intentionally or unintentionally - we can think about how important it is to call someone by their name. A name is a person's identity. In some instances it is about their destiny. It is how their presence is acknowledged. Their name is what gets their attention. Even the Bible in Isaiah tells us that God calls us by name.
So let's say her name, and others, correctly.
