The Road Already Traveled

"Why are they trying to tell me what to do?"  "She is not my momma."  "That's not how we do things anymore."

I have been on the receiving and giving ends of these types of comments.  Whether it is professional or personal, we all live in a whirlpool of advice.  Certainly not all advice is good (or godly) advice, but listening is necessary.  We have people who want the best for us and their way of showing it may be to offer us their words of wisdom whether welcomed or unsolicited.  Some of the best advice I ever received came from the unlikeliest of sources and, to be honest, sounded so ridiculous at the time because the delivery was so harsh.  Once I got out of my feelings and judgemental state, I realized that what the person was telling me was based on their real life experience and their concern for not wanting me to make the same mistake.  And they were right.

My point here is sometimes we just need to listen.  We may use the advice or we may not.  Use discernment to decipher if it is a word for your life. If it is a good road, look at their example, pay attention to their mistakes and use what fits your situation.  If it is a bad road, look at their example, pay attention to their mistakes and use what fits your situation.   Either way, never discount the experience of someone who has traveled the road you are on.
